Training can take many forms. From formal classroom sessions and eLearning modules to hands-on practice, job aids, and peer mentoring, effective training is about choosing the right method to meet the learner’s needs and the task at hand.

Looking to reskill for a new job?

Problem:
Back in 2019, I joined a job club that helped people reskill and transition into new careers. One of the training programs focused on Microsoft Office, and I took both the Word and Excel classes. It was a great experience and really built my confidence with those tools. As Office 365 started rolling out new features, the organizers wanted to update the training to keep it current—but they didn’t have anyone familiar with the latest enhancements to make those updates.

Solution:
Fortunately, I was familiar with the new Microsoft 365 enhancements for Word and Excel, so I offered to help update their existing training. I revised both the instructor and participant handouts to reflect the latest features, conducted in-person instructor-led training (ILT) sessions for the team and participants, and updated the hands-on demonstration exam to align with the new content. It was rewarding to contribute in a meaningful way and help others build skills that are relevant in today’s workplace.

Helping others learn Articulate Storyline

Problem:
While participating in an online training program, a group of us connected over a shared interest in breaking into the field of Instructional Design. As we got to know each other, side conversations began to form—many of which centered around Articulate Storyline. Most of the group had never seen or used the application before, but were curious about how it worked. Since I had some experience with Storyline, I offered to give them a quick walkthrough. When I asked if they were interested, the response was an enthusiastic, “Yes, please!” It turned into a fun and informal demo where I was able to share what I knew and help others get a feel for the tool.

Solution:
Instructor and participant guides were used for the virtual-instructor led training (vILT). A 1-hour google meeting was held and Loom was used to screen record the training.
